The Era of Independents: Before the turn of the century in 1900, the Chemin des Fers or Railway lines of France operated as independent companies. Each train line had its own train station in Paris, with Gare de Lyon serving the east and south of France.

PLM: Unifying the Rails: The PLM, or Paris Lyon Mediterrannee Railways, gradually brought together these disparate railway companies. It was during this transition period, spanning up until 1937, that some of the most iconic French travel posters were born.

Standardization by SNCF: In 1937, the SNCF took over the PLM and standardized travel posters to a uniform 24x39 inches to fit standard frames at train stations and travel agencies.
